Student Moving In Tips
If your move in day is fast approaching, whether you're a first year student or returning for another year, a bit of preparation can go a long way in making the process smooth and stress free. Here are some key tips to help you stay organised, especially when it comes to collecting your keys and arriving on time!
1. Schedule Your Key Collection Appointment Early
Most letting agencies and accommodation providers will offer specific time slots for you to collect your keys. These slots are often tightly scheduled, and with dozens (or hundreds) of students moving in on the same day, flexibility is limited.
Tip: Once you receive the link or details to book your appointment, do it as soon as possible to get a time that works best for you.
2. Save The Contact Details For The Person You’re Meeting
No matter how well we plan, delays sometimes crop up, make sure you know who you’re meeting so you can contact them if you’re stuck on the motorway, and check that they’re running on time too!
3. Arrive Early For A Stress Free Day
It might sound obvious, but being even 10 minutes late could throw off your whole day. Agencies may have back to back appointments with so many people moving in on the same day. Missing your slot could mean waiting hours, or even having to return the next day.
Tip: Aim to arrive 15–20 minutes before your appointment time to allow for parking, traffic or getting a little lost.
5. Pack Smart
Pack your bags how you’ll store them in the home. Section up your bags and boxes into kitchen, clothes, interiors, bedding so that you can start your time in your new home in an organised manner. You don’t want to be looking around your new room for hours trying to find your favourite pair of jeans.
6. Ask Questions Question Questions
Not sure how the heating works? Don’t know where to take your bins? Ask during your check in. Luxome have an extensive residents section on our website with all the key info you’ll need, if you’re not living with Luxome then make a note of all the points on that page, such as who to call in an emergency and ask your agent.
7. Check Your Keys Work
Test all the keys, sometimes you’ll be given copies and they don’t always work. Just be sure you can get in.
8. Check Your Inventory
You’ll have an inventory for your new home and its essential to check so you get your deposit back at the end of the tenancy. Add comments and mention anything that has been missed, such as marks on the walls or dusty skirting boards.
Only 5% of tenants add comments to our inventories, please add your comments so that you and the agent/ landlord have an accurate record of the condition of the home.
